f³ – Masterclass Documentary Photography

In the Shadow of Reality: Photographic images have never been called into question as often as in the past 12 months. A new reality is being staged with the help of voice commands (prompts) that goes beyond what photography has always been about. The boundaries between fact and fiction, documentation and visual construct are becoming increasingly blurred, and the question of the veracity of the photographic image is more central than ever before.

In contrast, the – Masterclass Documentary Photography, led by internationally renowned photographer, lecturer and university teacher Peter Bialobrzeski, is aimed at people who want to use photography to talk about phenomena of reality. All photographic subjects, portrait photography, street photography, architecture and landscape photography are welcome.

How do I photograph a feeling? A sound? Silence? The seemingly unphotographable and the possibilities of approaching complex and abstract contexts that become visible in supposed reality form the core of the examination of the medium of photography in the masterclass.

Over 12 teaching days (6 blocks of 2 days each), participants work on a topic of their choice. In close dialog with the instructor and within the group, the photographic approaches are refined both theoretically and practically and transformed into a coherent form. At the end of the course, the participants’ work is presented to a wide audience in an exhibition.

SCOPE: 12 teaching days of 7 hours each, always Saturday/Sunday
DURATION: April 2024 – June 2025

His 30th monographic book was published in fall 2022. In 2002, Bialobrzeski was appointed Professor of Photography at the University of the Arts Bremen, where he taught until 2021. Money, money, money: Where does the money for photographic projects come from?

The traditional markets for professional photographers have collapsed in recent years, the fees for publications in magazines and journals are barely enough to cover one’s living expenses, and the few jobs in advertising or event photography are fiercely contested. In order to realise freelance projects, photographers and photo artists are increasingly dependent on other sources of funding. It is becoming more and more important to apply for funding, to cooperate with (non-profit) organisations and to obtain funding from sponsors or the crowd. Using practical examples, the workshop deals with the different ways of financing projects and teaches the basics for a successful application. Together with the participants, financing strategies as well as cost and financing plans will be developed for their current or planned projects.

Lecturer
Jenny Petzold has a degree in geography and is a certified EU fundraiser. She works as a freelance project and funding consultant, and mainly supports associations in the fields of social work, culture, and development and environmental education, but also freelance artists. Since 2015, Jenny Petzold has been supporting the Society for Humanistic Photography (GfHF) in the acquisition of funding, accounting and evaluation of photographic projects. Her experience ranges from local to European funding. In addition to applying for funding, her focus is on calculating project budgets as well as the administrative and financial processing of freelance projects. In 2022, Jenny Petzold opened her own office – Jenny Petzold Fördermittelmanagement –https://jenny-petzold.org/ where she advises companies and creative professionals from all sectors.

Exhibit! – From the idea to the picture on the wall.

Producing outstanding photographic works alone is not enough. From conception and production to presentation and distribution, a photographic project must meet numerous requirements in order to be shown. Municipal galleries, renowned museums or public spaces: each exhibition venue places different demands on photographers in terms of content and technology.

In addition to a coherent exhibition concept, an aesthetically outstanding visual language and a professional realisation, the projects must transport relevant topics in a catchy way and appeal to a large, diverse audience in both form and content. Additional components, for example publications, multimedia presentations and concepts for education and outreach work, increase the chances of attracting the attention of curators and museum directors to your work.

The know-how required for this as well as the various aspects of the conception and realisation of an exhibition in cooperation with a national or international exhibition institution are the subject of the workshop. The speaker Katharina Mouratidi, artistic director of f³ – freiraum für fotografie, has been conceiving, planning and realising exhibitions with the most diverse cooperation partners at home and abroad for over 25 years. Together with her, the participants will develop concepts for their individual exhibition projects.

Lecturer
Katharina Mouratidi is the artistic director of f³ – freiraum für fotografie. Located near Oranienplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg, f³ – freiraum für fotografie presents outstanding photography exhibitions on the current issues of our time, including renowned positions in the history of photography as well as young, up-and-coming photographers and photo artists. These exhibitions are accompanied by regular talks, discussion events and workshops.

In her function, Katharina Mouratidi has been planning, curating and realising photography exhibitions and projects on socially relevant topics for many years, including: A Life In Death by American photographer Nancy Borowick (2017), The Heavens by Paolo Woods and Gabriele Galimberti (2018), Where Love is Illegal by Robin Hammond (2018), Greenpeace Photo Award with works by Pablo E. Piovano and Ian Willms (2019), ZEIT-ZEUG:INNEN – Icons of Photojournalism (2020), HIDDEN – Animals in the Anthropocene (2021), Ruth Orkin – A Photo Spirit (2021/2022) and Tina Modotti – Revolution and Passion (2022/2023).

Katharina Mouratidi is a jury member of numerous international prizes and awards, including: BarTur Photo Award, Lumix Festival Awards, Swiss Photo Award, Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize Hungary and Lotto Brandenburg Art Prize Photography. Further information: www.fhochdrei.org

ART MARKET FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS | ONLINE

Photography is popular and omnipresent. In addition to traditional commissioned photography, independent art projects can open up new possibilities and offer interesting perspectives. However, for many photographers and photo artists, the art sector is opaque and mysterious. In order to tap into the photography market, one must understand how it ‘ticks’. When did the art market for photography establish itself and what were the developments of the last decades and how are they currently? Even if there is no ‘instruction manual’ for a possible way into the art market, hints, suggestions, considerations, even questions can facilitate and point the way there. What are possible strategies and chances for a successful market participation? What are the requirements for the production and marketing of photographic art and how can they be met? What gallery or exhibition venues are there and which ones suit me? In addition to providing a detailed knowledge of the market, one of the main focuses of the workshop is to explore the potential of the participants’ works for the art market and to recognize their own competencies and strengths.

f3 – Masterclass Making Books!

The f– MASTERCLASS MAKING BOOKS! is aimed at photographers and photo artists who are currently working on their own book project. It can still be in the early stages or already be advanced. The passionate bookmaker Nadine Barth, who advises, among others, the renowned art book publisher Hatje Cantz in the field of photography, accompanies the participants’ projects for 10 months.

The 10 teaching days (5 blocks of 2 days each) revolve around all aspects that are essential for the successful realisation of a book project: the editing, the story line, the text/image relationship, the design as well as the technical equipment of the book (papers, printing processes, bindings). Nadine Barth imparts her extensive knowledge of all questions of cooperation with publishers and self-publishing in a practical manner against the background of her experience in more than 25 years of work in the industry.

The aim of the f3-– MASTERCLASS MAKING BOOKS! is to further develop the participants’ book projects in an intensive dialogue between the lecturer and the group. At the end of the masterclass, the participants will present the resulting books to a broad audience in the form of a presentation or a book dummy at f3 – freiraum für fotografie.

Digital Storytelling II

The course DIGITAL STORYTELLING II is aimed at photographers, photo and video artists, and students of these disciplines who already have experience in telling cinematic stories. It builds on the course DIGITAL STORYTELLING I, but can also be booked independently. The four-day class will focus on two issues: optimizing the content and design of film formats, and working with digital photo editors and online customers.

In the content part of the training, the participants’ cinematic narratives are developed and sharpened in close dialogue with the lecturer and examined to determine whether the narrative form and visual implementation successfully address the intended target group. The practical part of the course deals with the modern requirements of digital image editing as well as the technical and content-related prerequisites for working with customers in the online sector. The structure and processes of implementing film projects in large teams as well as for TV and production companies are covered. Technical questions and problems concerning film, sound and editing are discussed in a practice-oriented manner directly related to the participants’ projects.

Digital Storytelling I

The course DIGITAL STORYTELLING I is aimed at photographers, photo and video artists, as well as students of these disciplines who want to learn from scratch how stories can be told most impressively on film: On the Internet, as an editorial piece, in exhibitions.

The four-day training DIGITAL STORYTELLING I will address questions such as: Why do I want to tell this particular story? What is the best way to convey my story? Which basic rules of cinematic storytelling do I have to consider for sound, image and editing? What is the best pace and narrative flow?

In addition to the development of the participants’ filmic and multimedia formats from the idea to the storyboard, the technical implementation plays a central role in the course. Two days will focus on content and design aspects, while another two days will provide a technical introduction to the editing and sound processing program Adobe Premiere Pro.

FUNDING OF FREELANCE PROJECTS | ONLINE

Traditional markets for professional photographers have declined in recent years; the income is hardly high enough to cover one’s own living expenses, let alone to finance freelance photographic projects. Photographers are therefore dependent on other sources to cover the costs of their long-term projects and their publication in exhibitions and photo books. In the future, alternative strategies for acquiring funding will become increasingly important, such as cooperating with funding institutions, foundations and sponsors, submitting project applications to private and public sponsors, crowdfunding and marketing one’s own work via web platforms and collectives.

The workshop provides an insight into the different ways of financing projects and teaches the basics for successfully acquiring funding. In addition to extensive theoretical input on the topic, concepts for acquiring funding for the participants’ projects will be developed.

Lecturer
Katharina Mouratidi is the artistic director of f³ – freiraum für fotografie. Located near Oranienplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg, f³ – freiraum für fotografie presents outstanding photography exhibitions on the current issues of our time, including renowned positions in the history of photography as well as young, up-and-coming image authors. These exhibitions are accompanied by regular talks with photographers, discussion events and workshops.

Piovano and Ian Willms 2019), ZEIT-ZEUG:INNEN – Icons of Photojournalism (2020) and HIDDEN – Animals in the Anthropocene (2021).
