FOTO-Talk: Üzüm Derin Solak

Üzüm Derin Solak is a photographer, DJ and activist based in Istanbul. In her artistic practice, she explores social and urban transformation processes and critically analyses established visual and social narratives. Her work questions dominant, traditionally male and heteronormative perspectives and develops a queer-feminist view of personal and collective spaces of experience.

As a trans woman, Üzüm understands photography as an autobiographical and political medium. In her work, she examines how visual representations are created and how they can be reimagined through a queer-feminist perspective. In doing so, she explores the possibility of images that consciously break away from historically established power relations and open up alternative forms of seeing, remembering and narrating.

Üzüm Derin Solak currently lives in Berlin on a Martin Roth Scholarship. In conversation with Katharina Mouratidi, artistic director of f³ – freiraum für fotografie, she presents her artistic practice.
