Photojournalism is dead, long live photography in journalism! The editorial work and the work of photographers are an important part of the public, above all, but not only, the reporting from war and crisis zones. Andreas Trampe (Senior Photo Editor stern) and the photographer Espen Rasmussen discuss what the working conditions for photographers in journalism look like today and what personal challenges they have faced in their careers. They draw on their wealth of experience from the point of view of the photo editor and photographer and can provide insights from their own perspective.

Andreas Trampe has been working for stern since 1996. First as deputy department head in the picture department, and later for nineteen years as head of photography. He has been working for the magazine as Senior Photo Editor since 2019. Trampe is a co-founder of the “Hamburg Portfolio Review” and the annual stern support program “Junge Fotografie”, in which a student receives a one-year position as a photographer at the magazine after graduating from university.

Espen Rasmussen lives near Oslo, Norway. He mainly focuses on humanitarian issues and works as a photo editor at Norway’s largest news magazine VG Helg. He has received numerous awards for his work. In 2007, Rasmussen received a $60,000 grant from the Fritt Ord Foundation to continue his long-term project on refugees and internally displaced people around the world. The work was published in 2011 as a book entitled TRANSIT. Rasmussen has worked on several large long-term projects including: Hard.Land – a project about America’s middle class in the Rust Belt and White Rage – a reportage about right-wing people in the US and Europe.
