In addition to traditional commissioned photography, independent art projects can open up new possibilities and offer interesting perspectives. However, for many photographers and photo artists, the art sector is opaque and mysterious. In order to tap into the photography market, one must understand how it &#8216;ticks&#8217;. When did the art market for photography establish itself and what were the developments of the last decades and how are they currently? Even if there is no &#8216;instruction manual&#8217; for a possible way into the art market, hints, suggestions, considerations, even questions can facilitate and point the way there. What are possible strategies and chances for a successful market participation? What are the requirements for the production and marketing of photographic art and how can they be met? What gallery or exhibition venues are there and which ones suit me?
